Toronto this Victoria Day long weekend, May 15–18 2026: fireworks at Ashbridges Bay, free festivals, open patios, live music, and what's open on the Monday holiday. Your local guide.
Victoria Day long weekend is the unofficial start of summer in Toronto. The weather this weekend is looking excellent (18–23°C, mostly sunny), which means every patio in the city will be packed by noon Saturday. Here's the local take on how to make the most of May 15–18.
The main Victoria Day fireworks in Toronto happen on Sunday May 17 at Ashbridges Bay (the city's official display), with additional displays at Coronation Park and various neighbourhood events. Head to the Beaches boardwalk or the Lake Shore for a clear sightline. Arrive by 8:30pm for a good spot — the display starts at approximately 9:45pm. The waterfront will be extremely busy: TTC is the move, not driving.
Victoria Day is a statutory holiday in Ontario. Most restaurants and bars are open (often with modified hours). St. Lawrence Market is CLOSED on the Monday. The TTC runs on a Sunday schedule. Most major attractions (ROM, CN Tower, Ripley's Aquarium, AGO) are open. Grocery stores are open but may close earlier than usual — plan your Monday shopping Saturday or Sunday.
Victoria Day weekend is the busiest patio weekend of the spring. King West and Ossington will be packed by noon Saturday — get there before 12pm or accept a long wait. For something calmer with the same sun and food quality, the patios in Leslieville (Queen East) and Roncesvalles are excellent without the King West queue. Kensington Market on Sunday afternoon is the best casual eating in the city: Seven Lives tacos, Pamenar for Persian tea and sweets, Wanda's Pie for dessert.
Long weekend brunch in Toronto requires a game plan. The best plays: Lady Marmalade in Leslieville (arrive before 10am or after 1:30pm), The Stockyards in St. Clair West (massive portions, great fried chicken), Café Cancan in Parkdale (French-influenced, excellent pastries), or build your own at St. Lawrence Market on Saturday — the market is closed Sunday and Monday, so Saturday morning is your only window.

Where to brunch this long weekend
- Victoria Day fireworks at Ashbridges Bay — Sunday May 17, ~9:45pm. Free, no tickets needed.
- High Park — the forest is leafed out and the trails are excellent. Grenadier Pond is beautiful in mid-May.
- Harbourfront Centre — free outdoor programming all weekend. Check harbourfrontcentre.com for the schedule.
- Trinity Bellwoods Park — the Saturday people-watching scene is unmatched on a sunny long weekend. Bring a blanket.
- Kensington Market — Sunday afternoon vibe is excellent. Not yet Pedestrian Sunday (that starts in June), but the market hums on warm weekends.
- St. Lawrence Market (Saturday) — the Saturday farmers market runs until 3pm. Get the peameal bacon sandwich at Carousel Bakery.
- The Beaches boardwalk — perfect for the Victoria Day fireworks and great for a Sunday morning walk.
- Boardwalk walk from Woodbine to Balmy Beach — flat, scenic, the best free 30-minute walk in the east end.
- Remarkable Bean (coffee) — Queen East institution, excellent espresso and a good patio.
- Lick's Homeburgers — a Toronto original. The Beaches location is the classic spot.
- Kew Gardens — the park behind the Beaches is beautiful in May. Good spot to wait for the fireworks crowd to thin.
- Sunday farmers market at Ashbridges Bay — small but excellent local produce market on Sunday mornings.
- The Rex Hotel (Queen West) — live jazz most nights, free or small cover. The best-value live music in Toronto.
- Horseshoe Tavern (Queen West) — long weekend programming is typically strong. Check their calendar.
- Velvet Underground — alternative and indie programming all weekend.
- Lula Lounge — Saturday is salsa night with a free beginner lesson at 7:30pm. Live Latin jazz after. Perfect long weekend date night.
- Harbourfront Centre outdoor stage — free programming over the long weekend. Check harbourfrontcentre.com.
What to do Monday if everything else is busy The High Park trails, Scarborough Bluffs, and Toronto Island ferry are all running and usually less chaotic on the Monday than Saturday. If the city feels too packed, the Bluffs are 30 minutes from downtown by TTC and genuinely spectacular in May.
